Da Nang vs Hoi An: Where Should You Stay?
Beach city or lantern town? Here is how to decide whether to stay in Da Nang or Hoi An, or split your trip between both, based on your travel style and dates.

Should you stay in Da Nang or Hoi An? Stay in Da Nang if you want a big beach, modern hotels, city restaurants, nightlife and short airport transfers. Stay in Hoi An if you want a slower, romantic base with a historic lantern-lit old town, rice fields and bicycle rides. The two are only about 30 km apart, roughly 30 to 45 minutes by car, so many travelers split their nights between both.
Why does this matter? Where you sleep shapes your whole trip. Pick the wrong base and you may spend every day in a taxi, miss the evening atmosphere that makes Hoi An special, or find yourself far from the beach you came for. With a few honest questions, you can choose the right base in five minutes.
Key Takeaways
- Da Nang is best for beaches, modern comfort, day trips, nightlife, families and longer stays.
- Hoi An is best for atmosphere, culture, romance, tailoring and slow travel.
- The drive between them is about 30 to 45 minutes, and a private car or taxi cost roughly 300,000 to 450,000 VND as of late 2026.
- Hoi An's old town can flood during the rainy season, usually from about late October to mid-December.
- For trips of five nights or more, splitting your stay (for example three nights in Da Nang and two in Hoi An) often works best.
- Prices and rules change, so confirm details locally before you book.
Da Nang or Hoi An: The Big Picture
Da Nang is a modern coastal city. It has a long, wide city beach (My Khe), a river lined with lit-up bridges, high-rise hotels and beach resorts, and a huge range of restaurants, cafes and bars. Da Nang International Airport is inside the city, so most hotels are a short ride away.
Hoi An is a small, historic trading town. Its UNESCO-listed ancient town is full of old shophouses, temples, assembly halls and silk lanterns. Around it you will find rice paddies, vegetable villages, coconut forests and quieter beaches such as An Bang.
One administrative note: since mid-2025, after Vietnam merged many provinces, Hoi An has been part of the expanded Da Nang city. For travelers this changes very little. The two places still feel completely different, and you still travel about half an hour between them.
Stay in Da Nang If...
Da Nang is the better base for most first-time visitors who want variety and comfort. Choose it if:
- You want a proper beach holiday. My Khe and the beaches to the south are long, wide and great for swimming in the calmer months.
- You are traveling with kids. Short transfers, big resort pools, Asia Park and easy access to Ba Na Hills make family days simpler.
- You want day trips. Ba Na Hills, the Marble Mountains, the Son Tra Peninsula, the Hai Van coast and the train to Hue are all easier from Da Nang.
- You want city life. Rooftop bars, international food, malls, cafes and coworking spaces are all close by.
- You are staying a week or more. Da Nang has many serviced apartments and long-stay options.
- You have an early or late flight. The airport is close, which reduces stress.
The downside is that Da Nang can feel less "charming" than Hoi An, with wide roads and lots of construction. If you love old streets and lanterns, you will want at least a day trip to Hoi An.
Stay in Hoi An If...
Hoi An is the more atmospheric choice. Choose it if:
- You want romance and character. Evenings by the river with lanterns are the highlight of many trips.
- You love walking and cycling. The old town and nearby villages are best explored slowly, often on a bicycle.
- You are getting clothes tailored. Hoi An is famous for tailors, and staying nearby makes multiple fittings easy. See our guide to tailors in Da Nang and Hoi An.
- You want a quieter pace. Many boutique hotels and homestays sit among rice fields.
- You are into food and culture. Cooking classes, markets and heritage houses are on your doorstep.
The downsides: Hoi An's beaches are smaller than Da Nang's and some stretches have suffered erosion over the years, the old town gets crowded in the evening, and the airport is further away. Hoi An also has fewer big resorts and international chain hotels than Da Nang.
Getting Between Da Nang and Hoi An
The distance is short, so moving between the two is easy. As of late 2026:
- Grab or taxi: about 30 to 45 minutes. A car usually costs roughly 300,000 to 450,000 VND one way, depending on time, demand and exact pickup point.
- Private transfer: similar or slightly higher prices, with the option to stop at the Marble Mountains on the way. Our guide to hiring a private driver in Da Nang explains how to book.
- Public bus: about 20,000 VND per trip, but slower at around 70 to 80 minutes because of frequent stops.
- Motorbike: possible for confident riders with a valid license, via the coastal road through the beach areas.
Because the trip is so quick, staying in one place and day-tripping to the other is perfectly realistic. The main thing you miss by not sleeping in Hoi An is the quiet early morning, before the day visitors arrive.
Hotels and Neighborhoods to Consider
You do not need to pick a specific hotel yet. Start by picking the right area.
Da Nang areas
- My Khe and An Thuong (beach side): walk to the sand, lots of cafes and restaurants. Great for most visitors.
- Han River (city side): views of the bridges, close to markets, nightlife and the Dragon Bridge.
- Non Nuoc and the southern beach strip: quieter, with large resorts, and closer to Hoi An.
- Son Tra Peninsula: a few secluded luxury resorts set in the hills by the sea.
Hoi An areas
- Inside or next to the ancient town: walk to the lanterns, but expect noise and crowds in the evening.
- Cam Thanh and the rice field villages: peaceful, green and a short bike ride from town.
- An Bang and the beach area: a relaxed beach vibe about 10 to 15 minutes from the old town.

Weather and Flood Season
Da Nang and Hoi An share roughly the same climate. The drier months run from about February to August, with the calmest beach conditions from late April to early September. From about September to December, heavy rain is common, and typhoon risk peaks in October and November.
There is one big difference. Hoi An sits on the Thu Bon River and its old town is low-lying, so it floods in many years, usually from about late October to mid-December. Some streets can go underwater for a day or more, and boats may replace motorbikes for a while. In 2025, local reports described record river levels during late October.
If you travel in October or November:
- Consider staying in Da Nang and visiting Hoi An on a dry day.
- If you stay in Hoi An, choose a hotel outside the lowest riverside streets and ask about past flooding.
- Keep flexible bookings and check local weather warnings daily.
Costs: Is Hoi An Cheaper Than Da Nang?
Both places cover every budget, from hostels to five-star resorts. In general:
- Hoi An has many good-value boutique hotels and homestays with pools, especially just outside the old town.
- Da Nang has a much bigger range of beachfront hotels and resorts, plus apartments for longer stays.
- Food costs are similar in both. Simple local dishes are cheap in either place, while tourist-focused restaurants in Hoi An's old town can charge more.
Remember a few extra costs. Entering Hoi An's ancient town requires a ticket, which was about 120,000 VND for international visitors as of late 2026. If you stay in one place and visit the other, budget for transport both ways.
Five Questions to Help You Decide
If you are still torn, answer these five questions honestly. Each one points you toward one base or the other.
- What do you picture yourself doing at 7pm? If the answer is strolling under lanterns and eating by the river, lean Hoi An. If it is a rooftop bar, a seafood dinner by the beach or a night market in the city, lean Da Nang.
- How many days will you spend at the beach? One or two beach afternoons can easily be done from Hoi An. If the beach is the main reason for your trip, stay in Da Nang.
- Who is traveling with you? Young kids, older parents or anyone with limited mobility usually find Da Nang's wider pavements, bigger hotels and short airport run easier. Couples and solo travelers often love Hoi An's slower rhythm.
- How much do you want to move around? If your list includes Ba Na Hills, Son Tra, the Marble Mountains and Hue, Da Nang saves you a lot of travel time.
- When are you going? In the drier months, both are excellent. In October and November, Da Nang is usually the safer base because of Hoi An's flood risk.
If your answers are split down the middle, that is a strong sign you should do both. Start in one, move to the other halfway through, and you will get the best of each without any long transfers.
Our Recommended Split for Different Trip Lengths
There is no single right answer, so here are simple rules that work for most travelers:
- Two or three nights: stay in one place. Pick Da Nang for beach and day trips, or Hoi An for atmosphere. Do the other as a day or evening trip.
- Four or five nights: three nights in Da Nang and two in Hoi An works very well.
- One week: four nights in Da Nang (beach, Ba Na Hills, Son Tra, Marble Mountains) and three in Hoi An (old town, villages, a cooking class, tailoring).
- Long stay or remote work: base yourself in Da Nang and visit Hoi An on weekends.
A smart tip: put Da Nang at the end of your trip if you have an early flight, because the airport is much closer.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Staying in Hoi An for a beach-focused holiday and finding the beach smaller than expected.
- Staying in Da Nang and only visiting Hoi An during the hot, crowded middle of the day.
- Booking an old town riverside room in flood season with no backup plan.
- Forgetting the ancient town ticket.
- Underestimating evening crowds in Hoi An on weekends and holidays.
- Moving hotels every night instead of choosing one or two good bases.
